Autumn in the Smoky Mountains
Do you feel that? Do you feel that crisp coolness in the air? Isn't it just the best thing ever? October has arrived and with it, my favorite season. Autumn in the mountains is definitely a sight worth seeing. What we like to call "leaf looking" season can be some of the busiest times in these small towns, but the views are definitely worth it.
Black Balsam Ridge, 2017 |
If you get a chance to come to the mountains during this season take a drive along the parkway. If you want the full experience, bring along your hiking gear and pick a trail that is right for you! During this year of quarantining getting back out on the trails has been a lifesaver for me and I can't wait to revisit my favorites when they are in their full autumn glory.
There are many different trails for hikers of any skill level so don't worry if you aren't the most experienced hiker of the group. Pack some snacks and get out there!
Devil's Courthouse, 2018 |
If you are an early riser, I highly recommend a sunrise hike up to Devil's Courthouse. It's a steep but short trail and the view spans for miles around. Watching the sun rise over the distant mountains from the bird's eye view is probably the most at peace I have felt. From there, you can take trails heading back towards Black Balsam knob via the trails, or get back in your car and drive along the parkway. Whichever you choose, when the fall foilage is at its peak, you will have fantastic sights to see along the way.
Thanksgiving Morning, 2019 |
If morning hikes aren't for you, don't worry. Take it easy and find a coffee shop for some local coffee and a hot breakfast before you hit the trails. And once you've had your fill of the outdoors, come on down the mountain and visit some of us locals.
